Bet that baby moves some air on high! Been looking for a size like that!

Ya-Dikobraz OP t1_iwx9snc wrote

Yeah, it's not as safe as modern ones but it moves enough air. I usually don't use it when there is a cat in my room. Too easy to stick a paw in there. Or if you are drunk enough, something else.

Still got all your fingers?

Yes but I don’t run it when there is a cat in the room.

I have several of those old fans . My oldest one is from the 20s and looks almost like new. It doesn’t even hardly have any protection around the blade. But I don’t use them much either anymore since I ended up getting my mothers cat because she had to go to a nursing home. I’m afraid he’ll get his tail stuck in it. He got Very close one time, and I said that is it.

Mountain_Man_88 t1_ix03q0h wrote

Do your old fans get kinda hot on the motor? I have one and it gets a little toasty. Not sure how normal that is. There's a little hole on the back to put oil in, but I'm not sure how much or what kind should be used.

Verity41 t1_ix0q4j2 wrote

I have this going on too. Had one of these fans gathering dust in my garage for years, both because I’m worried about how warm it gets there and also because that open grill freaks me out frankly. I should probably just donate / sell the thing.

IAmanAleut t1_iwy8315 wrote

My 84 year old dad has one of these and he still uses it.

My grandmother has like 6 1950s fresh aire fans, all functional all great and I prefer them over any modern dyson crap anyday

Ya-Dikobraz OP t1_iwxdp01 wrote

Is that like one for each room or does she have a store?

CountryFine t1_iwy6uuf wrote

I have an older Dyson fan and it’s the worst. It doesn’t move much air, it’s not that quiet. And because the blade is deep inside the assembly, it’s impossible to clean. It sucks up dust like crazy and you can never get it out

Fans are one of the most efficient technologies. Hard for anything to go wrong with them if you keep them clean and oiled.

Looks like the one Chris Farley used in Tommy Boy, “Luke, I am your father”

What could a fan like that sell for? I might have one like it in storage and I'm wondering if it's worth selling.

-Ripper2 t1_iwyg1y9 wrote

eBay has a whole bunch of them. But most of them are overpriced I think. I got most of mine from a friend that had a bunch of them in his basement for $15 apiece. But I have bought a couple of eBay for a decent price. Some of them can be pretty expensive. It all depends on the size and if it is oscillating and the age.

Ya-Dikobraz OP t1_iwxgrjm wrote

Hit and miss on Facebook market. I got this one for $30 AUD. Probably much more at other markets or stores.

That font looks like it would be from the 80s! Interesting that it’s from the 50s.
